Youth reported safety behaviors*

Updated 8/20/18 – *Note that this measure is also a social determinant of health

According to the WCSD Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), high school student safety-related behaviors improved in the 2015 survey, but middle school student bullying has increased along with parents never/rarely/only sometimes asking where and with whom their middle schooler is going..

The YRBS is conducted in odd-numbered years with 7th –12th graders. TMT initiated a task force in 2010 following alarming results from the 2009 survey.  More than 25 collaborating agencies developed recommendations for needed policies including violence prevention education, intervention activities, and education programming.

Notes:

  • Middle school students were not included in the YRBS safety questions in 2013
  • ***2017 question changed; should not be compared to prior surveys
