DIGGING INTO THE DATA
The indicator data available to understand civic and neighborhood engagement in the Truckee Meadows includes voter turnout rates, participation in cleanup programs, park utilization along the Truckee River, advocacy for river health, social association memberships, engagement in educational programs about the river ecosystem, removal of trash and invasive plants from the river corridor, and volunteer engagement in various neighborhood services. The sources of this data include reputable organizations and initiatives such as One Truckee River, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB), Washoe County Registrar of Voters, Truckee Meadows Tomorrow, Conduent Healthy Communities Institute, Sierra Nevada Journeys, County Health Rankings, and various community health assessment reports.

The percentage of the population registered to vote in the Truckee Meadows has fluctuated over time, reflecting varying civic and neighborhood engagement levels. In 2022, Washoe County reported a voter registration rate of 79.4%, indicating a relatively high level of civic involvement. Historical data shows that voter registration rates have only sometimes been consistently high, with fluctuations observed over the years. Neighborhood Cleanup Volunteers
Volunteerism in community cleanup programs is a form of civic engagement that directly contributes to a community's health, beauty, and overall livability. It encourages individuals to actively participate in their community's development and environmental stewardship, ultimately strengthening the democratic process and fostering a sense of collective responsibility. The number of volunteers participating in various cleanup programs, such as the Truckee River Cleanup, Great Community Cleanup, Adopt-a-Spot, Neighborhood Cleanup, and Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe river cleanups, has fluctuated over the years. However, following the pandemic, volunteer levels increased dramatically.
